French crypto users at risk - uncertainty over potential Waltio data breach

Jan 23, 2026 | 1 min read

A potential data leak reportedly originating from French crypto tax assistance platform Waltio (and possibly extending to affiliated service providers) has possibly exposed personal information of holders of cryptocurrency. Breach data can, and has, previously enabled threat actors to target crypto users with physical violence, such as robbery, kidnap and home invasions in order to steal their assets.

French authorities, including the Paris Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Gendarmerie's UNCyber unit have initiated a preliminary investigation to determine the full extent of the incident.

SURGE IN PHYSICAL CRYPTO INCIDENTS IN FRANCE

Throughout January 2026 there have been at least six publicly reported incidents relating to either robberies, kidnappings or home invasions of people/their families who are involved in crypto/web3. This sudden surge in events aligns with ongoing discussion about potential data breaches. Waltio released a statement saying “Waltio does not collect and therefore does not hold your identity information”.

zeroShadow tracks all publicly reported physical crypto (wrench) incidents, 27 of which have occurred in France since 2017. While many take place in the suburbs of Paris, our tracking shows this is a nationwide issue.

ZEROSHADOW INSIGHT

Incidents involving physical attacks on cryptocurrency holders are escalating at an alarming rate, there has been a staggering 90.6% increase from 2024 to 2025. This recent uptick in France is particularly concerning, given that the perpetrators are highly organized and well-equipped groups. They exploit data from security breaches, such as one we recently reported on, to pinpoint and target crypto owners, and are often armed with firearms and willing to resort to extreme violence.
